Isaiah 11:1-10; Luke 10:21-24
Today’s Gospel invites us to explore the connection between faith and humility.
Faith flourishes in the land of humility.
Faith is not opposed to knowledge. Rather, knowledge should help us grow in faith.
The Oracle of Delphi declared that Socrates was the wisest of all the Greeks. But Socrates refused to accept it. Instead, he said, ‘The ancient Oracle said that I was the wisest of all the Greeks. It is because I alone, of all the Greeks, know that I know nothing.’ Saying so, instead of boasting or celebrating it, he was trying to disprove it. Such was Socrates’ humility, despite being the genius of his time.
In the Gospel, Jesus praises the Lord for making Divine Wisdom accessible to the childlike and not to those who consider themselves worthy and qualified.
True knowledge is at the service of the Lord. The more we know, the humbler we become, because our limited knowledge will help us glimpse into the boundless wisdom of God.
Without trying to confine the Lord into our little brains, let us surrender ourselves to the Wisdom Infinite. In that surrender, we will discover ourselves and the Lord!
Let us pray for an attitude of surrender as we prepare ourselves to welcome the Lord!
