Making Vigilance Habitual!

Rom 6:12-18; Lk 12:39-48

Today’s gospel continues the theme of watchfulness from yesterday!

We may have heard of the expression ‘military precision.’ It refers to a plan so elaborate and detailed that nothing is left to chance.

However, is it possible for someone to always be watchful so that they are not caught unawares? Is round-the-clock watchfulness not an ambitious project for humans? If constant vigilance is difficult for humans, how can we escape a life full of surprises?

To allay our fears, Jesus teaches that vigilance as a habit is the response to dealing with the uncertainty of life. If vigilance is habitual, a servant will not waste his time calculating the return of his Master. Extended to life, a life lived in goodness and virtues cannot be surprised by the reality of death.

If we have not mastered the art of being vigilant habitually, as George Elliot says, ‘It is never too late to be who you might have been.’

Let us pray that our good and virtuous lives signal our habitual readiness.
