Jer 1:1,4-10; Mt 13:1-9
Today’s Gospel invites us to understand the truth of the parable of the sower and to live it out.
The fact that Jesus ‘spoke at length in parables’ means that the words of Jesus must not be taken literally.
As such, though the parable of the sower is obviously about the seeds that fall on different types of land, it transcends the context of agriculture to relate to our spiritual and moral lives.
In the parable, falling away from the good soil means that the seeds will have little or no life at all. Hence, it is important for the seeds to fall on good soil, which is usually well-prepared for the seed to sprout, grow, and yield fruit.
Though the parable is self-explanatory, Jesus wants us to discover the meaning it bears for life.
If every Christian is a seed, the parable invites us to examine ourselves about the part of the field each of us has fallen into.
As human seeds who can enable our movement, what is our plan to move away from the wayside, rocky, and thorny land to the good soil?
What aids such movement? What prevents it?
As human seeds, let us pray for strength from God to move to the good soil to produce fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.
