He Appointed Twelve!

Heb 8:6-13; Mk 3:13-19

Today’s Gospel highlights Jesus naming his apostles.

The naming of the 12 apostles is interesting for many reasons.

Those He Wanted: The text underlines the fact that Jesus named those he wanted as apostles. There were many who followed Jesus. But Jesus’ heart went after only these twelve who would continue his mission.

He Appointed Twelve: Number 12 has great significance as the first symbolic step in Jesus’ constitution of the people of God. Number twelve also alludes to the tribes of Israel and points to the eschatological people of God’s Kingdom.

Being with Him: The idea of discipleship begins with a personal relationship before assuming a missionary pasture. Our personal relationship with Jesus is a prerequisite for spreading love in society in God’s name. We are with him to be for him.

Being Sent Forth: The apostles are named only to be sent forth into mission. If the end of our formation is not mission, then our vocation as Christians is self-defeating. Cherishing God’s goodness means to make the Good Lord known and loved.

Let us pray that we may fully understand and execute what our Christian vocation entails.
