Visible and Accountable!

Heb 10: 19-25; Mk 4: 21-25

Today’s Gospel highlights visibility and accountability as the twin responsibilities of the disciples of Christ.

Through his example of light, Jesus highlights the nature of Christian discipleship. Since Christians are followers of the Light (Jesus says, ‘I am the Light’ – Jn 8:12), we are called to inherit the property of light, which is to shine before others. Here, visibility is commended as a virtue of Christian discipleship. Hence, flight into the invisible is a denial of the call.

Similarly, when Jesus says, ‘Take care what you hear,’ he sends out a caution because what we hear binds us with a responsibility of making it known to others. When we have the privilege of the Good News being revealed to us, we are called to extend the privilege to everyone. The generosity with which we proclaim it determines the measure of our blessing in return.

In essence, the Gospel invites us to be what we are meant to be.

Let us pray for the grace to praise God through who we can become by making our discipleship visible and being accountable to the vocational mandate we have received.
