Heb 7:25-8:6; Mk 3:7-12
Today’s Gospel underscores the nature of shallow spirituality and invites us to discern the inward meaning of our pious activities.
It is described in the Gospel that ‘Hearing what he [Jesus] was doing, a large number of people came to him.’
Though Jesus becomes the center of attraction, it is not because of his message but because of his miraculous works.
In other words, the crowd celebrates Jesus for what he does and not for what he calls them to be and become.
In a way, the crowd’s response is based on convenience. They are carried away by the signs of the Kingdom without recognizing what they actually symbolize.
Though it is Jesus who proclaims the message, they ignore the worker but get carried away by his works. To make things worse, they are stuck in their superficial and peripheral response.
Even when the unclean spirits testify to the real identity of Jesus as the ‘Son of God,’ it becomes difficult for the band of his followers to perceive his identity.
Not understanding Jesus for who he is and lacking reflection on who we can become following him is shallow spirituality.
Let us pray for the grace that we may transcend whatever limits us to living a shallow spiritual life.
