1 Jn 3:7-10; Jn 1:35-42
Today’s Gospel highlights how we are empowered and transformed by our encounters with Jesus.
The passage also proves its importance in the way it underlines the success of John’s testimony, which makes two of his disciples follow Jesus.
Beyond the self-understanding of Jesus’ identity as the Messiah, John’s testimony had practical reasons. As such, his belief in Jesus is converted into a lifepath for his disciples.
In this regard, John’s testimony about Jesus makes clear one thing. His disciples may have begun with him, but their end is Jesus. John’s selfless attitude is noble.
Secondly, we find something beautiful unfolding in the call narrative here. Initially, Jesus invites John’s disciples to ‘come and see’ where he is staying. However, the invitation to stay with Jesus is pregnant with meaning and achieves its purpose.
Those disciples who stay with Jesus discover the uniqueness of the encounter and bring another person to him.
A real encounter with Jesus is so life-changing that we are empowered to go and make disciples in his name.
The power of such transforming encounters with Jesus enables us to reach out to others in his name.
Let us pray for transforming encounters with Jesus so we may become his emissaries.
