Ez 16:1-15,60,63; Mt 19:3-12
Today’s Gospel highlights that God willed the marital bond for the good of humanity.
A careful reading of the Gospel makes it clear that the intention of the Pharisees is to question Jesus on divorce. Whereas Jesus aims at reclaiming God’s intention for humanity.
Secondly, when Jesus talks of marriage as an indissoluble union, the Pharisees seem to emphasize a convenient contract in the name of marriage.
Thirdly, when the Pharisees comment on the freedom given by the law to divorce, Jesus insists that individual freedom cannot contradict the Divine Will for humanity.
Finally, the Pharisees find their escape routes through Mosaic laws. But Jesus overrides their claim and illuminates the Creator’s plan for humankind.
In sum, though it is a discussion on marriage, Jesus insists on the construction of a family as central to the common good.
Jesus holds that our plans should align with Divine Intentions.
Let us pray for the grace to commit ourselves to carrying out God’s will for us.
